A personal tribute to the band
I saw them as they were and this band (Free & Co.) sound like they were!!!
As a wannabe ‘Rock Guitarist’ of the early ‘70s, one of my favourite bands at the time was ‘FREE’ – I saw them many times in Plymouth – both at the old Van Dyke Club in Exmouth Road in 1968/1969 and in 1970 at the Plymouth Guildhall. ‘Alright Now’ had been released and they became ‘big’!!
Sadly, they split up and Paul Rodgers did return to the Guildhall with a band called ‘Peace’ which he fronted as singer (of course) but also playing a black Fender Stratocaster!!
Paul later formed ‘Bad Company’ and I bought all their albums (which I’ve still got… except for their first – ‘Bad Co’ which an ex-girlfriend kept!). I went to Earl’s Court in London to see ‘Bad Company’ in July 1977 – the show was fantastic. I was lucky enough to see them once again in March 1979 at the Brighton Centre – again, what a show!
Towards the end of last year I read in the local paper (Evening Herald) that an ‘Old Mate’ (hey, not so much of the “old” Pete - Ed) of mine who I hadn’t seen for years, Dave Holmes, was now the drummer in a new tribute band called Free & Co. and they were to play a gig at the ‘Roundabout’ in Plymouth. I went along (if nothing else, to see Dave again)… I could not believe how good they sounded – they really do create the sound of the original bands, so well that I would recommend anyone who ever once liked or still like ‘FREE’ or ‘BAD COMPANY’ to go and see them. You will not be disappointed, that I can promise you….
